26 November 1890 - 21 May 1978.
Sworn in on 6 November 1911 at the age of 21. That same year he attended the coronation of George V of England in London. Knighted in the Order of the Star on January 1, 1918. Abdicated in favour of his only son Yashwantrao Holkar II on 26 February 1926. Died in Paris.

The Emir of Bukhara

The Emir of Bukhara, Alim Khan (1880-1944) shortly after his succession. Bukhara was a semi-autonomous city state in Asia, which since the mid-19th century had been a vassal state of the Russian Empire. When the Soviets took power in Bukhara in 1920, the Emir fled to Afghanistan.

Hadendoa (nicknamed Fuzzy Wuzzy by the British during the Sudanese War) is the name of a nomadic tribe of the Beja people. The area inhabited by the Hadendoa is today parts of Sudan, Egypt and Eritrea. I met this Hadendoa in a tea shop in the middle of nowhere, somewhere between Suakin and Port Sudan.
